If the public API was to require a voltage value needed for the engine to lift the gate - that would violate the Information Hiding a great deal. First of all, the user of the module would need to know the details of the engine. Second of all, changing the gate to a pneumatic one would completely break all the code that uses the module. In terms of software design the equivalent violation would be to catch SqlException in the Business-Module. If I were to propose an implementation that leverages Information Hiding, it would be to accept the opening ratio instead of the voltage.
