After all, the common law was at its inception largely derived from continental Europe — it was feudal law originally “developed on the Continent, from the days of Charlemagne onwards” and “imported into England by the Norman conquerors.”107 After that, the common law was substantially influenced by academic treatises on the civil law108 and regular interaction with ecclesiastical canon law,109 itself largely derived from the classical Roman law from which the modern civil law largely originates.110
